Shavuot, Conversion, and “What does it mean to be a Jew”
On Shavuot we have a custom to read the book of Ruth. One significant reason is that Ruth’s conversion to Judaism is seen as a metaphor for the Israelite’s acceptance of Torah at Mount Sinai. With this metaphor as a backdrop, Ruth is the traditional paradigm for conversion to Judaism. We will use Ruth and the concept of conversion as a means to ask the question: What does it mean to be a Jew?
With panelists (as of May 3) : Miri Bernovsky, Tobias Dienstfrey, Jen Halpern, and Dallas Moore
