Adoptive Parent Meeting
Notice of Meeting for Adoptive Parents and others who are interested - speaker - Minna Scherlinder Morse - January 13, 2019
Are you the parent, grandparent, or friend of a child who has been adopted? Do you want a better understanding of some of the identity issues children of adoption might face? Please attend the third meeting of the group at Agudas Achim Congregation at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday January 13, 2019 in the Flax Chapel to hear a speaker, Minna Scherlinder Morse.
Minna Scherlinder Morse has spent most of her career as a writer and editor (for more than a decade at Smithsonian Magazine) and in nonprofit management (as founding director of the DC program of AVODAH: The Jewish Service Corps and executive director of Art & Remembrance). She now works as a consultant in both arenas. She and her husband, Rabbi Fred Scherlinder Dobb, of Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation (Bethesda, MD), live with their children in Washington, DC.
As the adoptive mother of two children of color—both adopted domestically and in open adoptions--Minna has created programming for Jewish adoptive families in her community and has been an advocate around issues of diversity and the concerns of adoptees in the Jewish community and beyond. She has served as an executive committee member and a local organizer for the Jewish Multiracial Network, and currently serves on the advisory board of the Adoption and Jewish Identity Project (AJIP), a new organization that seeks to educate about adoption in Jewish families, advocate for truly inclusive Jewish communities, and build networks of support for Jewish adoptees and their families.
Minna will share some of her own experience as a Jewish adoptive mom, discuss some fundamental ideas related to Jewish adoption (including findings from AJIP’s research), and invite a discussion of challenges in Jewish adoptive parenting using scenarios developed by AJIP.
Please let me know if you plan to attend so that I can get a rough count of the attendees.
